Using an eSIM on a dual-SIM iPhone: labels, default lines and roaming
How iPhone handles two lines, which settings decide what goes where, and the three screens to check before you fly.
Quick facts
A dual-SIM iPhone runs two lines at once: your physical SIM or home eSIM and the travel eSIM. Three settings control it: Default Voice Line (keep your home number), Cellular Data (the travel eSIM) and per-line Data Roaming (on for travel, off for home).

Step by step
Label both lines
Settings, Cellular, tap each line, Cellular Plan Label. Primary and Travel work well.
Default Voice Line: home
Keeps calls, SMS, iMessage and FaceTime on your usual number.
Cellular Data: travel line
And turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching so the phone never falls back to the home SIM abroad.
Data Roaming per line
Travel line on, home line off.
Check iMessage and FaceTime
Settings, Messages, Send and Receive: your home number should be ticked. The travel eSIM has no number to add.
Your destination. Your device. A plan that fits.
Check the phone, pick the plan, install on Wi-Fi, and switch on when you land.
What each app uses
Still stuck? Message us on WhatsApp and a real person replies in minutes.
Send a screenshot of the screen and your phone model. Most install and activation issues are fixed within ten minutes, 24/7, in English and Hindi. If your phone cannot take the eSIM, you get a full refund.
Status bar
With two lines active you see two signal indicators. The upper bar is the voice line and the lower the data line. If the travel line shows No Service at home, that is normal until you land.
Two eSIMs, no physical SIM
US iPhones from the 14 onwards and the iPhone Air everywhere have no SIM tray. Move your Indian number to an eSIM through your operator (Jio, Airtel and Vi all issue eSIMs by SMS or app) and the same settings apply with two eSIMs.

Frequently asked questions
Which iPhones are dual SIM?
Every iPhone from the XS and XR onwards: one nano-SIM plus eSIM, or two eSIMs on iPhone 13 and later.
Can both lines receive calls at the same time?
Yes on Dual SIM Dual Standby. If you are on a call on one line, the other goes to voicemail unless Wi-Fi Calling is on.
Will the travel eSIM have a phone number?
It shows a technical number but it cannot make or receive calls or SMS. Treat it as data-only.
Why does my iPhone use the home SIM for data abroad?
Allow Cellular Data Switching is on, or Cellular Data is set to the home line. Fix both.
Can I keep several travel eSIMs installed?
Yes, eight or more. Only two are active at once; switch in Settings, Cellular.
How do I move my Indian number to eSIM?
Through your operator app or by SMS; Jio, Airtel and Vi all support it. Do it a week before travel in case it needs a store visit.
