The problem

Vehicles move. A tracker fitted in Delhi can be in Nepal next week; a truck in Munich crosses four borders in a day. Single-network SIMs drop at borders, roaming bills arrive as surprises, and 2G sunsets strand older trackers. Fleet operators need one SIM that follows the vehicle and one bill they can forecast.

Connectivity requirements for fleet telematics

Fleet telematics connectivity requirements

Requirement What fleet telematics needs Data per device per month 10MB to 50MB for position, ignition and CAN bus data; 1GB to 5GB where dashcams upload video Latency Under 2 seconds for live tracking. Store-and-forward is acceptable during tunnels and coverage gaps Roaming permanence Vehicles rarely stay in one country long enough to trigger permanent roaming rules; multi-IMSI steering matters more than local profiles Power Vehicle powered with battery backup; trackers sleep when the ignition is off Preferred technology 4G LTE with 2G fallback for older trackers; LTE-M (Cat-M1) for trailer and container tags

How to deploy fleet telematics SIMs in 4 steps

01

Test with the trial kit

5 SIMs with 100MB each, 30 days, shipped in 3 to 7 working days. Fit them in your obd-ii plug-in trackers and check attach, signal and steering at real sites.

02

Order from 1 SIM

No minimum on IoT Go at US$1.00 per active SIM plus US$0.004 per MB. Choose 2FF, 3FF, 4FF or MFF2. API keys are issued instantly.

03

Configure for the use case

Automatic multi-IMSI steering across 600+ networks. Usage alerts and auto-suspend at a threshold you set. Register a webhook so alerts reach your own platform.

04

Scale on published rates

At 1,000 active SIMs the rate drops automatically to US$0.6 and US$0.0025. Above 10,000, IoT Enterprise adds an SLA and a dedicated manager.

Fleet telematics: questions engineers and procurement ask

How much data does a fleet telematics SIM use per month?

A tracker reporting position every 30 seconds with ignition and CAN data uses 10MB to 30MB a month. An ELD with driver messaging uses 30MB to 80MB. A dashcam that uploads event clips uses 500MB to 2GB, and one that streams continuously can exceed 10GB. Pooled data across the fleet smooths these differences.

What does 500 vehicles cost per month?

On IoT Go, 500 trackers at 20MB each cost 500 × US$1.00 + 10,000MB × US$0.004 = US$540 a month, or US$1.08 per vehicle. Add 100 dashcams at 1.5GB each and the pooled data adds 150,000MB × US$0.004 = US$600. Vehicles parked for the month with suspended SIMs cost nothing.

Will the SIM keep working when trucks cross borders?

Yes. The SIM carries several IMSIs and the network steers to the best available partner within about a minute of entering a new country. Coverage is through our carrier partners on 600+ networks in 180+ countries. Geo-fence alerts tell you when a vehicle enters a country outside your allowed list.

Do you support 2G trackers?

Yes, where 2G networks still operate. Many European and most North American 2G networks have closed, and India plans a phased shutdown. The diagnostics view shows which SIMs last attached on 2G so you can plan replacements. New installs should use 4G LTE or LTE-M.

Can I stop a SIM being pulled out and used in a phone?

Yes. Enable IMEI lock per SIM or per group. If the SIM attaches from a different IMEI, data stops within 60 seconds and a sim.imei_changed webhook fires. Combined with the US$1.00 per month fee and pooled data, the exposure from a stolen SIM is small.

Which telematics platforms can integrate with your API?

Any platform that can call a REST endpoint. We publish a Postman collection and snippets in Python, Node.js and cURL. Typical integrations pull usage daily, suspend SIMs when a vehicle is sold and trigger alerts into the fleet dashboard from our webhooks.

How does the free trial kit work?

Request it with a company address and use case. We verify the address, then ship 5 SIMs with 100MB each, valid 30 days, from India and the EU in 3 to 7 working days. You get console and API access on the day you request it, so you can start in the sandbox before the SIMs arrive.

Is there a minimum order or contract?

No. Order 1 SIM online on IoT Go at US$1.00 per active SIM per month with no contract. IoT Scale from 1,000 SIMs has an optional 12-month term that takes a further 10% off the SIM fee. IoT Enterprise above 10,000 SIMs is negotiated.

How quickly can I get API access?

Immediately. API keys are issued when you create an account. The REST API uses JSON, we publish a Postman collection, and there are snippets in Python, Node.js and cURL. A sandbox with simulated SIMs lets you test activation, usage and webhooks without hardware.
