5G not showing on your travel eSIM? Why, and when it matters

Roaming profiles often land on LTE even where the network has 5G. The reasons, the settings to check and why LTE is usually fine.

Quick facts

Main reason Roaming agreement is LTE-only
Second reason Phone lacks local 5G bands
Setting to check Preferred network type: 5G Auto
LTE speeds 15 to 60 Mbps typical
Does it matter? Rarely for travel use

5G not showing on a travel eSIM usually means the roaming agreement between the home and local networks covers LTE only, or the phone lacks the local 5G bands. Universal eSIMs plans include 5G where the partner network offers it to roamers, listed per destination. LTE at 15 to 60 Mbps still handles maps, video calls and HD streaming.

Four reasons you see LTE

  1. The roaming agreement is LTE-only5G roaming requires a separate commercial agreement between networks. Many are still LTE-only in 2026, especially outside Europe, the USA and the Gulf.
  2. 5G is non-standalone and the phone shows LTE while idleMany networks run 5G on top of LTE. The icon switches to 5G only when data is flowing.
  3. The phone lacks the bandIndian phones support n78 and n28 widely but may lack n41 or n71 used in the USA, or n257 mmWave.
  4. The setting is capped at LTEiPhone: Settings, Cellular, travel line, Voice and Data, 5G Auto. Android: Mobile networks, Network mode, 5G/LTE/3G/2G auto.

Where 5G is available to roamers

As of October 2026, 5G roaming is common on our partner networks in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the UK, most of the EU, the USA (T-Mobile and AT&T), Japan, South Korea, Australia and Thailand, and less common elsewhere. The destination page lists the technology per network.

Frequently asked questions

Do your plans include 5G?

Yes, where the partner network offers 5G to roaming profiles and your phone supports the band. The destination page lists it per network.

Why did 5G work on my home SIM in India but not on the eSIM abroad?

Different agreement. Your home operator may have a 5G roaming deal with that network; the eSIM profile's home network may not.

Is LTE enough for Instagram and YouTube?

Yes. LTE at 15 to 60 Mbps handles HD streaming.

Can I force 5G?

You can set 5G On rather than 5G Auto on iPhone, but if the agreement is LTE-only nothing changes and battery drains faster.

Does the unlimited plan throttle 5G?

After 2GB a day the speed is 3Mbps regardless of technology.

Which phones have the most 5G bands?

Recent iPhones and Galaxy S-series carry the widest band lists. Indian mid-range phones often omit US bands n41 and n71.
