How much data do you need for a trip? A planner for 3, 7, 14 and 30 days
Measured per-app figures, four traveller profiles, and a table that turns trip length into a plan size. Written for travellers from India who want to buy once and not top up.
Key facts
Most travellers use 300MB to 700MB a day abroad, so a 5GB plan covers one week and 10GB covers two weeks with photos and video calls. Heavy video streaming or a shared hotspot pushes daily use past 1.5GB, where an unlimited plan is cheaper.

Why most data estimates go wrong
People plan around what they do at home, where Wi-Fi carries the heavy traffic. Abroad, the phone is the only connection for everything: navigating from the airport, checking in to the hotel, translating a menu, finding a restaurant, uploading the photos, and calling home. The same person who uses 2GB a month of mobile data in Hyderabad can use 500MB a day in Rome.
The second mistake is ignoring background traffic. Photo backup, app updates, email sync and WhatsApp media downloads happen whether or not you touch the phone. A single day of iCloud Photos backup after a day of sightseeing can consume a gigabyte.
The third is forgetting the hotspot. If a partner, child or laptop will share your connection, their use is your use.

Four traveller profiles
The light user. Maps, WhatsApp, a few searches, photos backed up at the hotel on Wi-Fi. About 150MB to 250MB a day. A 1GB plan covers a long weekend and 3GB covers a week with margin.
The typical traveller. Everything above plus an hour or two of social media, a video call home most evenings and occasional music. About 400MB to 700MB a day. This is the profile a 5GB 30-day plan is built for: one week with headroom, or ten days if the hotel Wi-Fi is decent.
The content creator or family organiser. Hours of social media, constant photo and video uploads, Google Photos running in the background, group video calls. About 1GB to 1.5GB a day. Buy 10GB for a week or 20GB for two.
The remote worker. Video meetings, a laptop on the hotspot, cloud documents, VPN overhead. 1.5GB to 3GB a day. A 20GB plan covers a working week; unlimited covers two weeks without counting.
The planner table
Plan size by trip length and profile
Prices depend on destination tier. As examples, 5GB is ₹649 for Thailand (tier A), 10GB is ₹1,199 for the UK or Japan (tier B), 20GB is ₹2,499 for the 42-country Europe plan, and 7-day unlimited is ₹1,599 on tier B destinations.
Hidden data users to switch off
- Photo backup. iCloud Photos and Google Photos default to backing up over mobile data on many phones. Set both to Wi-Fi only before you fly.
- WhatsApp media auto-download. Family groups can push hundreds of megabytes of videos a day. Settings, Storage and Data, Media auto-download, set to Wi-Fi.
- App updates. App Store and Play Store automatic updates over mobile data; turn off.
- Video autoplay in Instagram, X, Facebook and LinkedIn.
- Email with attachments syncing every few minutes.
- Map tiles re-downloading in areas you have already visited; download offline maps for each city.
When unlimited wins
Unlimited plans give full speed for the first 2GB each day, then 3Mbps until midnight local time. 3Mbps still carries maps, messaging, music and SD video. The arithmetic: if you would otherwise buy 20GB for a week, the 7-day unlimited plan is usually cheaper and removes the counting. If you would buy 5GB or 10GB, the fixed plan is cheaper. For families sharing a hotspot, unlimited removes the risk of one person's video habit draining everyone's data.
Ten ways to use less data
- Download offline maps for every city before departure.
- Download playlists and podcasts on Wi-Fi.
- Set photo backup to Wi-Fi only.
- Set WhatsApp media download to Wi-Fi only.
- Turn off video autoplay in social apps.
- Use Low Data Mode (iPhone) or Data Saver (Android) for background apps.
- Download streaming episodes on Wi-Fi for flights and trains.
- Use hotel Wi-Fi for large uploads at night.
- Close apps that refresh in the background, such as news and stock apps.
- Check the balance in the app every couple of days; alerts arrive at 80 percent.
If you do run short, a top-up applies to the same eSIM within a minute, without a new QR code.
Frequently asked questions
Is 5GB enough for a week abroad?
For most travellers, yes. 5GB is about 700MB a day, which covers maps, messaging, social media and a daily video call home. Streaming video or sharing a hotspot needs more.
How much data does a 10-day Europe trip need?
Typically 5GB to 7GB, so a 10GB plan is the comfortable choice, especially with train journeys where onboard Wi-Fi is poor. The 42-country Europe plan covers border crossings.
Is 1GB enough for 3 days?
For a light user who downloads maps in advance and avoids video, yes. Typical users should pick 3GB for safety.
How much data does Google Maps use for a whole day?
Under 50MB for a full day of walking navigation, and far less with offline maps downloaded.
How quickly does a video call use data?
About 1MB a minute, so a 30-minute WhatsApp video call uses 30MB. Voice calls use a tenth of that.
Should I buy more than I need?
Buy the size the planner suggests. Top-ups take a minute if you run short, and unused data is not refundable.
Does hotspot data come from the same plan?
Yes. Count the hours your laptop or second phone will use.
