eSIM for first-time international travellers from India: the complete guide
Everything a first-time flyer needs to stay connected: what an eSIM is, whether your phone supports it, how to keep your Indian number for OTPs, what to do at the airport, and what it costs against roaming.
Key facts
A travel eSIM is a digital SIM you install by QR code before you fly. For a first international trip from India it replaces roaming at 60 to 90 percent lower cost: a Universal eSIMs 5GB plan is ₹649 for Thailand and ₹1,049 for the UAE, against roaming packs of ₹575 to ₹1,101 a day.
Prices checked on 25 October 2026 · Hotspot allowed on every plan · Full refund if your phone cannot install the eSIM

What an eSIM is, in plain words
A SIM is a small identity card that tells a mobile network who you are. An eSIM is the same identity stored as software on a chip inside the phone, so it can be delivered by email as a QR code instead of by courier. A travel eSIM is a prepaid data plan for another country delivered that way. You install it at home on Wi-Fi, switch it on when you land, and your phone connects to a local network such as AIS in Thailand or Etisalat in Dubai.
The eSIM is data-only. It does not give you a phone number for calls or SMS, and it does not need to: WhatsApp, Google Maps, Uber, Grab and every other app run on data. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone for the few things that still need your real number, mainly bank OTPs.
Step 1: check your phone (two minutes)
Dial *#06# in the phone app. A box appears with IMEI numbers. If there is also a line labelled EID, your phone has eSIM hardware. Every iPhone from the XS onwards sold in India, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Pixel 7 and later, OnePlus 11 and later, and most recent Motorola Razr and Edge phones pass. Many Redmi, Vivo, Galaxy M and older phones do not. The compatibility checker has the full list with Indian variants flagged.
Second check: the phone must be unlocked. Phones bought outright in India always are. A phone brought from the USA or the Gulf on a carrier contract may be locked; the carrier can unlock it.
If the phone fails either test, order a physical travel SIM instead. Same plans, delivered in India, with a short KYC step.
Step 2: choose the plan
Three decisions: destination, data and validity. For one country, buy that country's plan. For two or more countries in the same region, buy the regional plan: the Asia eSIM covers Singapore, Malaysia and Bali on one QR code; the Europe eSIM covers 42 countries including the UK and Switzerland. For data, 5GB covers a week for most people; see how much data you need. Validity on our plans starts when you first connect abroad, not when you buy, so buying early costs nothing.

Step 3: install at home on Wi-Fi
Pay by UPI or card. The QR code arrives by email and in the app within a minute. On iPhone: Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM, scan. On Samsung: Settings, Connections, SIM manager, Add eSIM. On Pixel: Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, Add SIM. Label the line Travel. Full walkthroughs with the manual-entry route: iPhone and Android. Do this the night before, not at the gate; it needs Wi-Fi and three calm minutes.
Step 4: set up dual SIM so OTPs keep arriving
This is the step first-timers skip. Set mobile data to the travel eSIM and turn on data roaming for it. Keep the Indian SIM on, set as default for calls and SMS, with data roaming off. Incoming SMS, including bank OTPs, is free on most Indian operators abroad; data on the Indian SIM would be billed per MB. Make sure international roaming is enabled on the Indian SIM in the Jio, Airtel or Vi app before departure, or it will not register abroad at all. The dual-SIM guide has the exact screens.
Step 5: at the airport and after landing
- Before departure: complete the arrival card online where required (Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia all have one). Download offline maps and your hotel address.
- On landing: take the phone off Airplane mode. The travel eSIM connects within a minute; the Indian SIM shows a foreign network for calls. If nothing happens after a minute, toggle Airplane mode once more.
- Immigration queues: you now have data to message your pickup, open the hotel booking and book a Grab or Careem while you wait.
- Airport Wi-Fi often needs an SMS code; you no longer need it.
- No service? Seven checks, each under a minute.

Seven first-timer mistakes
- Installing at the departure gate on airport Wi-Fi that drops mid-download. Do it at home.
- Leaving data roaming on for the Indian SIM. That is how surprise bills happen.
- Not enabling international roaming on the Indian SIM, then wondering why OTPs never arrive.
- Deleting the eSIM after the trip while data remains and a return trip is planned; it cannot be reinstalled.
- Buying a single-country plan for a multi-country trip.
- Letting iCloud or Google Photos back up over mobile data on day one.
- Expecting the eSIM to show signal in India. It connects only abroad; No Service at home is normal.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an eSIM for my first international trip?
You need some form of data abroad. The eSIM is the cheapest and simplest if your phone supports it; otherwise a physical travel SIM. Roaming works but costs three to ten times more.
Will my bank OTPs work abroad?
Yes, if the Indian SIM stays in the phone with international roaming enabled. Incoming SMS is free on most Indian operators; keep data roaming off on that SIM.
Can I buy the eSIM at the airport in India?
Yes, from the website on airport Wi-Fi or your mobile data, but install it on a stable connection. Buying a week ahead is safer and costs nothing extra because validity starts on first connection abroad.
Does the eSIM give me a local phone number?
No. Travel eSIMs are data-only. Calls go over WhatsApp. Students staying longer should look at the student SIM, which includes a local number.
What if my phone does not support eSIM?
Order a physical travel SIM, delivered in India in 2 to 5 working days with the same plans.
Is it safe to pay by UPI?
Yes. Checkout is in INR with UPI, cards or net banking, and a GST invoice is issued. A full refund applies if the eSIM cannot be installed.
Can my parents top up my eSIM from India?
Yes. Anyone can top up an eSIM by its ICCID from their own account, which is useful for students and first-time travellers.
