eSIM troubleshooting: no service, no data, APN and install errors

Twelve problems and their fixes, from "no service" after landing to "PDP authentication failure" and "cellular plan cannot be added". Work down the list in order.

Quick facts

First fix Airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off
Second fix Data roaming on for the travel line
Third fix Manual network selection
Fourth fix Check the APN
Still stuck WhatsApp support, 24/7

Most eSIM problems have one of four causes: the travel line is off or not set as the data line, data roaming is off for it, the phone has latched onto a network that is not a partner, or the APN is wrong.

Before you start: the four settings

  1. Travel line is oniPhone: Settings, Cellular, travel line, Turn On This Line. Android: SIM manager, travel line enabled.
  2. Travel line is the data lineiPhone: Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data. Android: SIM manager, Mobile data.
  3. Data roaming on for the travel lineTravel eSIMs are roaming profiles by design. With roaming off they never connect.
  4. Home SIM data roaming offPrevents surprise charges and stops the phone preferring the wrong SIM.

Problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix No service after landing Phone has not searched for a partner network yet Airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off. Wait 60 seconds. If still nothing, select a network manually (below). Connected to a network but no data Data on the wrong line, roaming off, or wrong APN Check the four settings. Then check the APN against the email. "PDP authentication failure" (iPhone) APN or roaming mismatch after a network change Toggle Data Roaming off and on for the travel line, cycle Airplane mode, then reset the APN: Settings, Cellular, travel line, Cellular Data Network, Reset Settings. Unlimited plans run at 3Mbps after 2GB a day and reset at midnight destination time. "Cellular plan cannot be added" (iPhone) Code already used, Wi-Fi dropped, or carrier lock Confirm the QR has not been scanned on another device. Reconnect Wi-Fi and retry with manual entry. Check Settings, General, About, Carrier Lock. If used on another phone, contact us. Manual network selection, step by step

iPhone: Settings, Cellular, tap the travel line, Network Selection, switch Automatic off, wait for the list, tap one of the networks named on your destination page. Android: Settings, Connections or Network and internet, Mobile networks, choose the travel SIM, Network operators, Search networks, choose manually. Return to Automatic once you are connected, or leave it manual if the phone keeps wandering.

APN settings

Most plans configure automatically. If your email lists an APN: iPhone, Settings, Cellular, travel line, Cellular Data Network, type the APN under both Cellular Data and Personal Hotspot, leave username and password blank. Android: Mobile networks, Access Point Names, add new, Name and APN both set to the value, save, select it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my eSIM say "No Service"?

The line is off, roaming is off, or the phone has not found a partner network. Cycle Airplane mode, confirm data roaming is on for the travel line, then select a network manually from the list on your destination page.

What is PDP authentication failure?

An iPhone error meaning the data session was refused, usually after a network handover. Toggle Data Roaming for the travel line, cycle Airplane mode and reset the Cellular Data Network settings. It is not a billing problem.

Do I need to set an APN?

Usually not. If data does not start and the email names an APN, enter it under the travel line only.

Does Airplane mode really help?

Yes. It forces a fresh network search and re-registration, which resolves most "no service" cases within a minute of landing.

I deleted the eSIM by mistake. Can I reinstall it?

Travel eSIM profiles install once. Contact us with your order number; where the plan allows we issue a replacement for the unused balance.

My plan shows used but I never connected. What happened?

Validity starts on first connection. If the line connected briefly at the airport or during a layover in a covered country, that counts. Check the usage log in your account and contact us if it looks wrong.

Does a VPN break the eSIM?

No, but some VPNs block the activation handshake. Turn the VPN off during install and first connection, then back on.
