eSIM vs physical SIM for travel: which should you choose?

The practical differences for a traveller from India: delivery, cost, dual-SIM behaviour, phone support and what happens when something goes wrong.

Quick comparison

Delivery eSIM: 60 seconds by email. Physical: 2 to 5 days in India
Phone needed eSIM: unlocked eSIM phone. Physical: any unlocked phone
Home SIM eSIM: stays in. Physical: swap or use slot 2
Price Same for most destinations
Loss risk eSIM: none. Physical: can be lost

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile installed by QR code; a physical SIM is a plastic card. For travel, eSIM wins on delivery (60 seconds, no post), keeps your Indian SIM in its slot, and cannot be lost. A physical SIM wins when your phone has no eSIM or is carrier-locked.

When a physical SIM is the right call

  • Your phone has no eSIM (most Redmi, Vivo, Galaxy M-series and older phones). Check with the compatibility checker.
  • Your phone is carrier-locked and the carrier will not unlock it before you travel.
  • You are carrying a spare basic phone for a long stay and want the travel line on it.
  • You prefer a card you can move between devices.

When eSIM is the right call

  • You are leaving within a few days and cannot wait for a courier.
  • You want your Indian number live for OTPs and WhatsApp while abroad.
  • You travel often and want to keep profiles for several countries installed.
  • Your iPhone is a US model with no SIM tray.

How to decide in three steps

01

Check the phone

Dial *#06#. An EID line means eSIM hardware. Then check it is unlocked.

02

Pick the format

eSIM if the phone passes; physical SIM if not. Prices are the same for most destinations.

03

Order the right lead time

eSIM: any time, even at the airport on Wi-Fi. Physical SIM: at least five working days before departure.

Frequently asked questions

Is an eSIM cheaper than a physical SIM?

At Universal eSIMs the plans cost the same for most destinations. The physical SIM adds a courier charge in some pin codes. Elsewhere, eSIMs are often cheaper because there is no logistics cost.

Can I use a physical travel SIM and keep my Indian SIM?

Yes on a dual-SIM phone: Indian SIM in slot 1 with data roaming off, travel SIM in slot 2 set as the data line.

Does a physical SIM need KYC?

Physical SIMs shipped within India require an identity check under Indian telecom rules. Travel eSIMs issued on foreign networks do not. Details on the KYC page.

Can I convert my physical travel SIM to an eSIM later?

Not on the same plan. Buy the eSIM version for the next trip; the plan ladder and prices are the same.

Which is better for a long student stay?

Neither travel product. Use the student SIM, which includes a local number and monthly renewals.

What happens to the eSIM if I lose my phone?

Nobody can use it without unlocking the phone. Contact us; where the plan allows we issue a replacement profile for the unused balance on your new phone.
