The 60-second test: dial *#06#
Every phone with eSIM hardware has an EID, a 32-digit embedded identity document number. Open the phone app, dial *#06# and a box appears listing the IMEI numbers. If an EID line appears below them, the hardware supports eSIM. If the box shows IMEI numbers only, the phone has no eSIM and you should order a physical travel SIM instead.
On iPhone you can also look in Settings, General, About and scroll to EID. On Samsung the same screen is Settings, About phone, Status information. The EID test is the one that matters; model lists, including ours, cannot capture every regional variant.
Carrier lock: the second thing to check
An eSIM-capable phone can still refuse a travel eSIM if it is locked to the carrier that sold it. Locks are common on phones bought on instalment plans in the USA, Canada, Japan and parts of Europe. Phones bought outright in India are sold unlocked.
- iPhone: Settings, General, About, Carrier Lock. It should read "No SIM restrictions".
- Samsung: Settings, Connections, SIM manager. A locked phone shows a message about the network when you add a second line, or refuses to download the profile.
- Pixel: Settings, Network and internet, SIMs. Locked units show "SIM locked by carrier" after a download attempt.
If your phone is locked, ask the carrier for an unlock; most are obliged to grant it once the contract is paid off. We refund any plan that cannot be installed on a locked phone under the refund policy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
Dial *#06#. If the result lists an EID number, the phone has eSIM hardware. Then check that the phone is not carrier-locked. Our compatibility checker gives a per-model verdict and notes about regional variants.
Which phones support eSIM in India?
iPhone XS, XR and every iPhone since; Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Z Fold and Z Flip, A34, A54 and A55; Google Pixel 3 and later; OnePlus 11, 12, 13 and Open; Motorola Razr and Edge 40 and 50 series; Oppo Find X8. Many Xiaomi, Vivo, Nothing and budget Samsung phones sold in India do not have eSIM even where the global unit does. The full list flags each one.
Does an eSIM work on a dual-SIM phone?
Yes, and that is the normal way to use a travel eSIM. Your Indian SIM stays in the slot for calls and OTPs with data roaming off; the travel eSIM carries data. Read dual-SIM setup for Indian travellers.
Can I use a travel eSIM on an iPad, laptop or smartwatch?
Cellular iPads, Surface and WWAN laptops: yes. Smartwatches: no, because watch eSIMs can only be provisioned by your home carrier. See tablets and laptops.
My phone is not on your list. Can I still buy?
If *#06# shows an EID and the phone is unlocked, yes. If the install fails on a compatible, unlocked phone we refund in full. If you are unsure, send the model and EID screen to us on WhatsApp before buying.
What if my phone has no eSIM?
Order a physical travel SIM, delivered in India before you fly, with the same plans and prices for most destinations.
