Who the API suits

Travel platforms

OTAs, airlines, tour operators and travel super-apps that already know the destination and date and want to add an eSIM at checkout or in the pre-trip flow.

Fintech

Banks, neobanks and forex-card issuers that want to issue an eSIM when a card is loaded or a trip is detected.

Device and IoT builders

Hardware makers and logistics platforms that need SIM lifecycle control for trackers, POS terminals and sensors. See IoT SIM.

eSIM API questions

Is the Universal eSIMs API public?

The overview, endpoint list, event list and commercial terms are public on this page. Full reference documentation and keys are issued after a short scoping call, because the API issues real eSIMs against a prepaid wallet. Sandbox keys are issued within 2 working days of applying.

How does the sandbox work?

The sandbox at sandbox-api.universalesims.com mirrors production endpoints with test keys prefixed sk_test_. Orders return test eSIM profiles that do not connect to any network. A sandbox-only endpoint simulates installation and activation so you can test every webhook event end to end without spending money.

What does the API cost?

There is no API fee. You pay for plans at wholesale, indicatively 30% to 45% below retail depending on committed monthly volume, from a prepaid wallet or on monthly settlement for approved accounts. Revenue share from 20% is available if you prefer to sell at our retail price.

How are webhooks secured?

Each payload is signed with an HMAC-SHA256 signature in the X-UE-Signature header using your webhook secret, includes a timestamp to prevent replay, and is retried with exponential backoff for 24 hours until your endpoint returns a 2xx.

What is the availability target?

99.9% monthly API availability, measured on the order and status endpoints, with a public status page, incident reports within 48 hours and service credits in the agreement. eSIM fulfilment is under 60 seconds in normal operation.

Can I get the QR as an image and as a string?

Yes. Every fulfilled order returns a hosted QR PNG URL and the raw LPA activation string, so you can render the QR yourself, deep-link iOS 17.4+ universal eSIM installation, or send it by your own email or WhatsApp channel.

Does the API cover student SIMs and IoT SIMs?

Student SIM kits are in the catalogue with a local-number flag and a continuation plan ID. IoT SIMs use the same order endpoint for IoT Go plans; IoT Scale and Enterprise accounts get the IoT management API with SIM lifecycle controls, which is documented separately.

What are the rate limits?

600 requests a minute per key by default, with burst allowance, and higher limits on request. Idempotency keys on POST requests make retries safe for 24 hours.

How does this compare with other eSIM APIs?

As observed in October 2026, PingSIM and Onomondo publish API documentation and Matrix, Maya Mobile and 1GLOBAL provide APIs on request or under NDA. None of them publishes wholesale pricing alongside the API. Universal eSIMs publishes the endpoint list, sandbox details, wholesale range, revenue share floor and SLA target here.
